Buthoe, Butua, Budua, Butoba, Budova and Civitas Antiqua…

…are the most characteristic antique and Middle Age names for Budva.
According to the knowledge we have from the antique sources (the abundant archeological material), Budva is one of the oldest Adriatic towns. It dates back to around 2500 years ago. The land of the Ilarian Enheley tribe, on which Budva was built, is mentioned in myths of Kadmus and Harmonia, who came to these lands from the Greek kingdom of Thebes.

It is said that Budva got its name after the bulls or the bull carriage which had brought Kadmus and Harmonia to these lands (from greek: bous, means cattle). Budva used to be a part of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, it was also ruled by the Nemanjić family, the Balšić family, the Crnojević family, the Republic of Venice and Austro-Hungary, it was an integral part of former Yugoslavia and later on, after the years of turbulence in the Balkans in the nineties, it regained its independence in 2006.

Every single hystorical period left its print in the architecture, customs, and language of the native population.
