…are the most characteristic antique and Middle Age names for Budva.
According to the knowledge we have from the antique sources (the abundant archeological material), Budva is one of the oldest Adriatic towns. It dates back to around 2500 years ago. The land of the Ilarian tribe, on which Budva was built, is mentioned in myths of Kadmus and Harmonia, who came to these lands from the Greek kingdom of Thebes.
It is said that Budva got its name after the bulls or the bull carriage which had brought Kadmus and Harmonia to these lands (from greek: bous, means cattle). Budva used to be a part of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, it was also ruled by the Nemanjić family, the Balšić family, the Crnojević family, the Republic of Venice and Austro-Hungary, it was an integral part of former Yugoslavia and later on, after the years of turbulence in the Balkans in the nineties, it regained its independence in 2006.
Every single historical period left its print in the architecture, customs, and language of the native population.
Budva’s offer in terms of entertainment is various and very rich: the Sea Dance festival, the festive New Years Eve, the Fiest of Širun, the Petrovac Night and many others.
Speaking of night life in Budva, we should mention the world famous “Top Hill”, an open club/discoteque, where numerous regional and worldwide stars performed. Many different clubs in Budva would satisfy everyone’s taste, big and small, open or closed. Budva also offers a great number of exquisite restaurants in the Old Town, as well as along the coastline.
As for the cultural offer, we have to mention the “Theatrea City Budva” festival, the Jazz festival in Petrovac etc.
Many world famous stars from the world of film, music, theatre, fashion and entertainment performed in Budva, but many times, Budva was the destination they chose for their holidays.
Some of them are Richard Widmark, Sofia Loren, Carlo Ponti, Jeremy Irons, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Sylvester Stallone, Claudia Schiffer, Ronald Harwood, Tomaž Pandur, Roberto Cavalli, Renato Balestra, The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Julio Iglesias, Gypsy Kings and many, many others.
